Since I first started sailing multihulls, I have been dong a lot of my training in Clearwater, Florida.  My coach, Robbie Daniels and Red Gear Racing are based here and so it is a perfect place to train in light and shifty breeze.   9da6b3d5-46f3-4742-880b-b5d5c39ddf41-thumb

Red Gear Racing offers a pretty incredible setup for young and advanced sailors of all ages.  They offer low-priced training “camps” throughout the year to bring small groups of cat sailors together to hone their skills or even see if the boat is something they would enjoy (like my first time on a cat).  Red Gear Racing provides a one-stop shop for these camps.  They have boats available (they are the importer of the AHPC Viper and the C2 Catamarans) for anyone that does not have one or can’t get it to Florida.  They also provide housing at their compound just a couple miles from the sailing center in Clearwater.  For people that stay with them, they also provide all the meals while at their camps.  Best of all is that they video a lot of the sailing each day so after they serve dinner, Robbie provides a detailed debrief of the day and creates a list of “to learn” items for the next day!  They even provide transportation from and to the Tampa airport for their camps so those of us that have to fly in don’t have to worry about anything.  Those of us whose parents are actively involved can feel comforted that Robbie and Jill provide supervision and when necessary discipline so kids like me often spend extended amount of time with them to get extra sailing in (remember that I spent the majority of the month of January living there).

This weekend I am training with a couple different people, as I am still looking for a permanent partner for my campaign.  Then I start training on a C2 F18 on Monday to get ready to sail in the St Pete NOOD regatta next weekend at SPYC!  I am sailing with Todd Riccardi from New England at the NOODS and Todd was a huge supporter of me when I was at the height of my Opti career and through the transition into Multihulls.  I am looking forward to sailing with Todd next weekend and am hopeful that we will push ourselves onto the podium at St Pete Yacht Club!

In the coming weeks I am getting ready for the first US Sailing Team Multihull practice which will be close to my winter home in Miami and the CISA spring multihull clinic in Los Angeles.  These are both providing a little stress in my life because I am also looking for a full-time partner on the boat to sail this summer in Europe in preparation for the US Sailing Youth Champs in Corpus Christie and then onto Youth Worlds 2014.  The hope is that if we put some results together over the next year and win at ISAF Youth Worlds next year that we will be well situated to continue into a Nacra17 program for the Olympics in Rio2016.  Unfortunately, I am finding difficulty in working through school and other issues with a youth partner when looking at two big training events in short order near the end of the school year.  I am confident I will find someone, but if you have any recommendations I am open to all suggestions at this point!

If you are cold or bored, come down to Florida and spend some time on the water with me!

Check out some of the upcoming events I will be sailing at!
