The first time Jessica Claflin sailed a boat, she knew she wanted to go fast. She was 10 years old, and she has never looked back. She has raced consistently ever since in a wide array of boats: Optis, Lasers, 420s, and Snipes, always trying her best to “go fast” and collecting countless national and international awards while doing so.
Now Jessica, who went to The Lincoln School in Providence and graduated from Brown with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and an M.S. in Fluid and Thermal Sciences, wants to take it a step further by sailing the Nacra-17, the fastest boat out there, to the Olympics in 2016.
It will be a long trip to get there for Jessica and her partner David Hein, out of Cleveland. Yes, there are many hours of training, traveling, and competition ahead. But these two face the challenge most future Olympians face- a monetary one. Olympic hopefuls are self-funded, and sailors must buy their boat, sails, rigging- not to mention travel, coaching, food… All in all, a year of competition could cost the duo around $500,000.00.
